Artist Statement

Andy Perez

I am a collage artist, painter and graphic designer.  I feel like I am the most "myself" when I am making art. Creating art has always been a form of grounding and connection for me. I feel at peace and enter a meditative state when working in my studio. Artwork helps me connect with myself while I make it and to other people when they view the work.

My artwork subject matter ranges from Hollywood to the woods behind my house. Celebrities, meditation, location, and current events in popular culture are all sources of inspiration for my work. Pop culture and spirituality are both themes that I have been exploring simultaneously. I have always been interested in current events and famous people, and in the past couple of years I have been excited about exploring spirituality and metaphysics.

The process I use to create art is something that I developed starting in college and have been refining and revising ever since.  My artwork is created with acrylic paint on paper, cut up, and glued to another surface - usually paper, masonite panel or stretched canvas. I usually start an artwork by making colorful abstract textures on paper. I love the freedom of painting on the paper knowing that I will be cutting it up and completely altering the way it will be viewed. Newly painted stock and recycled collage material from past projects in my studio all end up in the mix. The results are bold, colorful and a little quirky. The way I mix unique textures and hues together makes my work easily recognizable. I am constantly finding new ways of working with the materials and combining painting and collage aspects.
