Artist Statement

Adam Barmore

I am a self-taught artist native to Louisville. I have always been surrounded by art, and my mother encouraged me to be creative for as long as I can remember. After going through a health scare five years ago, I began finding my voice as an artist. I began seeing beauty in everyday things: a blue jay that stops for only seconds in my yard, a daffodil that blooms but for a few days each Spring, an old monastery perched on its hill—both of us under the same sun. All of these things—and I continue to find many more--make me grateful to be present in the moment.

I would describe my style as minimal and abstract while still depicting recognizable subjects. Acrylic is my current choice of medium. When I compose a scene, I first sketch the main lines and then disconnect as many as possible while retaining the integrity of the subject. It’s during this stage of the process that I look for a balance and harmony of lines and when I first start to feel excited about what I am creating. I like to think that in breaking the lines, everything becomes connected and interwoven.

Outside of painting, I have worked in Community Mental Health for 23 years. My lifework has been helping others find their voices. I am now excited to develop and give expression to my own.
