Gordon (Tom) McMurry

Gorden enjoyed drawing as a child and during his pre-college years, but no art-related courses were available in the rural school system where he was educated. During his undergraduate training and then medical school, there was no time to pursue artistic interests.

In 1965-1966, while in his internship in Southern California, he bought and painted, two, Paint-by-Number pieces of beginner art work.  That experience ignited his artistic painting interests, and he found a gallery where the professional artist/owner gave lessons.  For 6 months, when not tied up in the hospital where he trained, Gorden would spend 3 hours each Wednesday evening, painting with the gallery owner, William Yelland. He sold one of his first paintings for $250 in 1966.

Over the next several years he would paint an occasional commissioned work but his busy medical practice as an ENT microsurgeon in Louisville, did not allow for much painting time.  He planned to return to full-time painting after retiring which he did in 2020.

Although he has had little formal "art education" and has been largely self-taught, his self-study has been more in-depth and real world than any academic coursework one could ever imagine. Beyond that, he has a keen sense of observation. He is an avid photographer and usually carefully composes the photos he takes from the point of view of an artist. He is usually thinking, "how would I paint this?".  He has already used several of his photos as starting points for paintings.
