Artist Statement

Connie Sandusky

Connie Sandusky is an American (1961) painter working in an abstract/expressionistic style using acrylics, inks and a variety of mark making tools.  Painting directly and intuitively, her aim is to express, not illustrate.  While animals and the natural world figure prominently in her work, she is equally inspired by the energy of the city.

“I’m not interested in trying to recreate what I see, but rather to try to capture my energetic response to a thing.  My work is an ongoing dialogue of life experiences and personal reflection using paint, and all of its potential with color, texture and gesture as my vocabulary.”

H. Matisse is credited with the phrase “Exactitude is not truth”.  I appreciate this, as I continue on this 20+ year journey to make art that feels emotionally honest.
